Invest Your Energy More Wisely

In business and life, it is important to fully utilize your energy output. By wasting your energy on useless things, you can’t fully focus and execute on important events. By focusing on the things that matter most to you, your energy quality will enable you to be more efficient. By following the five steps that we have generated, one can begin to understand how they too can fully utilize their energy output.

Observe your energy. Do you fully utilize your energy? I set my watch to beep during every hour of my conscious day to focus on how I’ve spent my energy physically and mentally over the past hour. By looking at my day through the energy lens, I’ve started to visualize things differently. These simple check-ins have enabled me to control my energy to be as efficient as I possibly can be.

Understand what is important to you. Understand what brings joy and efficiency to your life. It is crucial to make educated decisions about where to exert your energy. Don’t go seeking for something that might backfire and hurt you. By doing this you are wasting your energy towards something that is ultimately going to hurt you. This action could be trying to reach out to an old boss or partner.

Spend your energy wisely. Once you know what is important to you, do these things as much as possible. I believe that having a busy schedule of things that make you happy, increases energy and productivity. I found that preserving over people or things that irritate me is never an efficient way to spend energy. However, thinking about how I can learn from an incident is always a good use of energy. At the end of the day, scheduling a time to reflect on how you spent your energy is very valuable.

Know where not to invest your energy. Once you start noticing your energy, you will understand what actions are energy drainers. While it may be difficult to stop completing something while you’re in the middle of it, it is far less difficult to not start in the first place. For example it is easier to not enter a debate with a strongly opinionated person than it is to leave mid conversation.

Don’t spend excessive time worrying about your energy. The process doesn’t have to be perfect, it simply has to be better than yesterday. Constantly thinking about your energy output is an energy drain of itself. Utilizing your energy is as simple as avoiding pointless conversations, ignoring useless emails, and letting go of irritating thoughts.
